Arthritis and Running
Experts from one of Americas most prestigious universities, Stanford University has announced that exercise in the form of jogging, running and aerobics can offer as much as 12 years protection from osteoarthritis. According to Professor Jim Fries and his team, they discovered that people who exercise regularly are significantly less likely to develop this condition as compared with "couch potatoes". He also added that running between six to 20 miles a week would be ideal, as it would provide optimum protection. During the course of study, which began in 1984, the researchers found that 20 percent of the participants who led inactive lives suffered from pain and disability as compared with just 5 percent of those who ran regularly. These runners also had greater bone density and experienced less bone mineral loss. A spokeswoman for the UK charity Arthritis Research Campaign said, "Sitting around and being a couch potato is the worst thing you can do for your health - whether or not you've got arthritis. So, getting up and exercise is probably the best thing." Source: Reported by www.bbc.co.uk on October 16, 2002.
