CoEnzime Q10 slows Parkinson's Disease
A new interesting report that was presented at the annual meeting of American Neurological Association in New York City suggested that Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) could slow down the rate of progression of Parkinson's disease. This hypothesis was arrived at after an extensive study was carried out. Led by Professor Clifford Shults from the University of California in San Diego, he used a sampling group of 80 Parkinson's patients who had early-stage Parkinson's disease but were not required levodopa yet. At the beginning of the study, these patients were randomly assigned to a treatment with 300, 600, or 1200 mg/d of CoQ10, or an inactive placebo. Eight months later, the results revealed that patients who had received the highest dosages of CoQ10 had showed a 44 percent reduction in disease progression, compared with the placebo group. Those patients who received the lowest dosage supplements felt more rejuvenated, happier and had more energy to carry out their simple daily activities such as dressing and washing. Based on the above results, the researchers are suggesting that CoQ10 slows down the progression of the neuro-degenerative disease. SOURCE/REFERENCE: Archives of Neurology 2002; 59:1541-1550.
