Cough & Sore Throat Misdiagnosed
A study was made comprised of a group of 250 adults that had fever lasting less than a week, coupled with a cough, sore throat, hoarseness or a head cold. During this study, these patients were first examined and their blood taken by the doctors before diagnosing the infection as bacterial or viral. Their blood was once again taken 3 to 4 weeks later.
Tests were done on the blood for antibodies to a number of different bacteria and viruses. A comparison was made between the first and second blood test taken from these patients (based on the fact that antibodies to infectious agents can persist in the body for a few years). The illness was then diagnosed based on the changes in antibody level. However, such a method would not be feasible for diagnosing an illness before treatment.
Based on this study, the results revealed that those doctors accurately diagnose the cause of infection to be viral only 60% of the time and bacteria only 50% of the time.
