Cholesterol Causes Cognitive Impairment
In California, an interesting study was done on a group of 1,000 post-menopausal women with heart diseases. This objective was to find out if there was a link between cholesterol levels and the use of cholesterol lowering drugs and cognitive skills in older women.
In this study, cholesterol levels were measured in three categories: -
1. HDL or good cholesterol level
2. LDL or bad cholesterol level
3. Triglyceride level
At the end of the study, a mental examination on these patients was done to assess cognitive impairment.
It was found that women with high LDL scored worse on cognitive tests and were more likely to have cognitive impairment than women who had lower LDL levels. Normal triglyceride levels showed no connection to cognitive impairment.
Women who did not use medication to lower their cholesterol scored lower on the cognitive tests and had a higher likelihood of cognitive impairment.
