Antibiotic Resistance Increases
Researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta examined pneumonia bacteria resistance to macrolide antibiotics in a recent study. Macrolides are a class of antibiotics recommended as a first-line treatment for adults with pneumonia in the United States and Canada. Macrolides include erythromycin, clarithromycin, and azithromycin.
Known for their less adverse effects and their convenient dosage schedules, macrolides have become increasingly popular among patients. However, it is unknown whether macrolides remain useful for the treatment of the most potent bacteria resistant strains.
According to the Journal of the American Medical Association (2001;286:1857-1862), streptococcus pneumonia bacteria is the most common cause of pneumonia. Researchers examined close to 16,000 strains of the bacteria. The found that as macrolide use increased by 13 percent in the population and by 320 percent among children, macrolide resistance increased by nearly 10 percent. The resistance to the drug has caused treatments to fail.
