
Hypothermia Can Help to Bring Back the Dead
Experts are studying a method to revive heart-arrest patients who cannot be resuscitated. By rapidly flushing cold saline or salt water into the main artery, scientists believe it can cool the brain, heart and organs five to 10 degrees. This process known as hypothermia helps to lower body temperature, which can facilitate survival.
Hypothermia, or body cooling, produces a state of suspended animation and may provide doctors with additional time to care for patients whose blood pressure has stopped during heart arrest.
It has been shown in laboratory studies that lowering the body temperature by two to three degrees during severe hemorrhagic shock can double the survival time and rate. The technique would involve producing mild hypothermia by undressing patients or using any of a variety of blood-cooling methods. This could provide valuable extra time to transport and resuscitate them.
At the American Society of Anesthesiologists annual meeting in New Orleans on October 13 to 17, 2001, experts added that there have been many cases where patients have drowned in frozen water and were revived after being pulled from the water. In recent studies, researchers said that they had done the same thing in laboratory animals after two hours of death.
