Cigarettes Harmful to Bones
Researchers at the "Orthopaedics Update" meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons said that new research has shown that cigarette smoking is harmful to bones, muscles and joints.
Stuart A. Hirsch, M.D., from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons said, Nicotine slows down fracture healing, estrogen effectiveness and it counteracts the antioxidant properties of vitamins C and E therefore predisposing smokers to increased hip fracture risk." He also said that smokers are more likely to have lower back pain than non-smokers.
Dr. Hirsch added that cigarette smoking is implicated in several musculoskeletal disease processes. The disadvantages of smoking include:
Smokers have more severe disc degeneration than non-smokers.
Smoking weakens spinal ligaments.
Fractures take longer to heal in smokers.
Postmenopausal smokers lose bone mass more quickly.
Smoking reduces production of bone cells.
In one study, researchers from Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC found that 50 percent of workers who smoked had low back pain compared to 20 percent of non-smokers.
