Aging Effect on Male Infertility
Research has shown that a woman's ability to conceive decreases with age but similar trends have not been extensively studied among men. However, a recent study shows that as men age, their reproductive capabilities also decline.
At the 57th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine in Orlando, Florida, researchers from Kentucky and Puerto Rico presented their research on how aging affects male fertility. Researchers tested the semen in 530 young men, aged 20 to 30 years and older men, aged 51 to 60 years.
The researchers point out that the fertilization rate for men more than 39 years of age is about 51 percent as compared to more than 60 percent in men younger than 39 years of age. This aging effect is more pronounced in men who already have fertility problems.
The data shows, although men produce sperm continuously throughout their lives, their odds of impregnating a woman decrease with age. Researchers measured semen volume, concentration, count and motility and found after men reach age 25, their reproductive capabilities start to decline.
