How Aging Affects Male Infertility
A recent study has shown that as men age, their reproductive capabilities decline. The fertilization rate for men more than 39 years of age is about 51 percent as compared to more than 60 percent in men younger than 39 years of age. This aging effect is more pronounced in men who already have fertility problems.
At the 57th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine in Orlando, Fla., which was held from October 20 to 25, 2001, researchers from Kentucky and Puerto Rico presented their research on how aging affects male fertility. Researchers tested the semen in 530 young men, who were aged 20 to 30 years and older men, aged 51 to 60 years.
Test results showed that although men produce sperm continuously throughout their lives, their odds of impregnating a woman decrease with age. Researchers measured semen volume, concentration, count and motility and discovered that after men reach the age of 25, their reproductive capabilities start to decline.
