Effects of Potassium on Blood Pressure
A recent study found that potassium supplementation may help reduce blood pressure among people who live in China. In this trial, 150 individuals were given either a placebo or potassium supplements for a period of 12 weeks. The results showed that blood pressure levels significantly improved in the group receiving potassium.
Potassium is one of the major electrolytes in the body, along with sodium and chloride. Potassium and sodium work together like a molecular seesaw: when the level of one goes up, the other goes down. These dissolved minerals play an important chemical role in every function of the body.
Similar studies of potassium supplementation performed in various parts of the world have produced mixed results. It could be that potassium supplements improve blood pressure mostly among people who consume a great amount of salt.
Since salt is sodium chloride, most of us get more than enough sodium in our diet. Most people in the developed world consume enough potassium from their daily diet as well. However, in Asian countries, a low intake of potassium is more common, while salt intake remains high.
