Drink Your Protein after Training
Dutch researchers at the Sports Medicine Research Unit at Bispebjerg University found that elderly men who drank a protein supplement immediately after resistance training gained significantly more muscle mass than those who waited two hours to consume their protein.
After decades of shying away from weight training, its now increasingly accepted by the medical community that strength training can help offset some of the loss of muscle associated with aging.
One of the traditional outcomes associated with the aging process is a loss of overall muscle mass. This can lead to a wide variety of health issues including problems with posture, strength, energy, and overall vitality.
Bodybuilders have long known that consuming high quality protein immediately after training can lead to increases in muscle mass. Now research has proven that this time-tested practice can also help older trainers maintain and in many cases gain muscle.
The Journal of Physiology (2001; 535: 301-311) noted that while the study was confined to men between the ages of 70 and 80, the findings could have broader significance.
