Japanese Women Live Longest
Japanese women have retained the title as the longest-living people on earth for the 16th year in a row. Official figures released last week showed that a Japanese woman can expect to live till the age of 85 years.
The average life expectancy for Japanese men was 77.64 years in 2000 and 84.62 years for women. These figures showed increases of 0.45 and 0.61 years respectively from the numbers for 1999.
The government report also predicts that life expectancy could increase by 8.02 years for women and 8.72 years for men if effective treatments are found for cancer, heart disease, and cerebrovascular disease - the three major causes of death in the country.
As revealed on www.reutershealth.com dated 2 August 2001, it is not yet clear which country had the longest life expectancy for men in 2000 as close contenders for the title, such as Hong Kong, Iceland, Switzerland, and Sweden have yet to release the relevant data.
