High Blood Pressure Cause Linked to Y Chromosome
Researchers said that the reason why men have a higher risk for high blood pressure than women could be due to the Y chromosome. The X and Y chromosomes are what determine an individuals gender. Females have two X chromosomes while men have one X and one Y chromosome.
To determine which of the Y chromosomes put an individual at greater risk for high blood pressure, researchers used an enzyme called Hind III. Researchers found that men whose DNA was not split by the enzyme had average blood pressure levels. Men who tested positive for Hind III, or whose DNA was split by the enzyme, had consistently higher blood pressure levels than their counterparts who tested negative.
It was revealed at the American Heart Association's 55th Annual Fall Conference of the Council for High Blood Pressure Research held from Sept. 22 to 25, 2001 that data was collected from 204 families in Poland whose members had high blood pressure. DNA samples were taken and researchers studied the difference between two forms of the Y chromosome.
