Fruits and Veggies Good for Women

Investigators have found that two dietary patterns have emerged in studies conducted on more than 69,000 women. They found that women who follow a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fish but low in processed foods and red meat can expect to have their risk of heart disease lowered by up to a third.

The so-called ``prudent'' pattern included higher amounts of fresh vegetables and fruit, whole grains, legumes (beans and peas), poultry, and fish. The second pattern - known as the ''Western'' diet - was high in refined grains, red and processed meats, desserts, and high-fat dairy products.

But even after considering factors such as smoking and body weight, women with the more prudent diet were about 25 percent less likely overall to develop heart disease over 12 years than were women who followed a Western diet.

Women who scored the highest on the prudent diet scale and lowest on the Western diet scale had the lowest heart disease risk, which was 36 percent lower than that of women lowest on the prudent diet scale and highest on the Western diet scale.

The Archives of Internal Medicine (2001; 161:1857-1862) added that women who followed the prudent diet also had healthier lifestyles in general -smoking and drinking less, eating more fiber and protein, and consuming less saturated fat.
