Good News for Nerve Transplants
Scientists have managed to reconnect severed spinal cord nerves using collagen tubes. Paralyzed rats that were given collagen tubes to repair their severed spinal cord nerves showed improvements in muscle tension and resistance six to nine months after the surgery had been carried out.
Researchers from the University of Paris in France placed one end of the severed nerve seven millimeters away from the other end inside the tubing. A later examination revealed that the nerves had re-grown along the pathway created by the tube. Nerve signals were thus able to pass along the reconnected nerve to the affected muscle as reported by Reuters Health on the 22nd June 2001
