Elderly at High Risk of Surgery-Related Death
Researchers have found that the risk of death usually increases with age. In fact, for most procedures, patients aged 80 years or older are at twice the risk of death as patients aged 65 to 69.
The research team headed by Drs. John D. Birkmeyer and Emily Finlayson from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in White River Junction, Vermont, explained that this discovery was made from a small series of patients who were treated at institutions much different from the surgeon's own. The current study is different from others in that it included a large, nationwide group of patients who were treated at a variety of different-sized medical centers.
Data was analysed from 1.2 million patients older than age 65 who underwent elective surgery between 1994 and 1999. Patients were found to have a less than one in 25 risk of dying as the result of procedures such as carotid endarterectomy (a stroke-preventing procedure that involves removing fatty plaque from inside the carotid arteries in the neck that lead to the brain), the removal of a kidney or the removal of part of the bowel.
The risk of death from other procedures, including cardiac bypass surgery and removal of part of the lungs was between 4 and 9 percent. The risk of death from complete removal of a lung or of the esophagus was greater than 9 percent, according to the findings published in the July/August issue of Effective Clinical Practice.
