Will Hormone Replacement Therapy Lead to Cancer?
Two groups of studies have opposing views on whether hormone replacement increases the risk of cancer. Researchers from the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia say there is an increased risk of breast cancer in women who use hormone replacement therapy.
Researchers studied breast samples from 11 postmenopausal women. They found higher levels of the estrogen receptor in women who use hormone replacement therapy. Researchers said an increased level of the estrogen receptor increases the risk of breast cancer.
However, they highlighted that as their study had a small number of participants, further research studies should be conducted. Their research is published in the journal Breast Cancer Research.
On the other hand, a study conducted by researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and published in the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology, discovered that there was no evidence to support the claim that estrogen use actually increases the risk of breast cancer.
Researchers reported there was evidence to support that women on hormones and estrogen were less likely to die from breast cancer than non-users. They also reported that there was no evidence to support the theory that hormone replacement therapy increases the risk of breast cancer more than estrogen use.
Researchers reviewed 25 years of research for the study. The authors of this study say given the long-term inconsistency of study results on breast cancer, the possibility that estrogen or hormone replacement therapy increases the risk of breast cancer even over many years of use is likely to be small, according to Obstetrics & Gynecology, 2001 (98;3:498-505) and Breast Cancer Research 2001 (3:342-345).
