Home based Strength Training Can Reduce Knee Pain
A new study has revealed that a home based strength training program can lead to major improvements in pain, strength, physical functioning, and quality of life in older people with osteoarthritis of the knee.
Investigators from Tufts University studied 46 people with knee pain who were aged 55 and older. About half of the group received a home based strength training program while the other half went through a nutrition education program that didn't involve any strength training. The subjects in the strength-training group performed a specially designed set of exercises three times a week during a four-month period.
When compared to the control group, patients who completed the four-month strength- training program had a 43 percent reduction in pain, a 44 percent improvement in physical functioning, and improvements in physical performance, quality of life, and self-sufficiency.
At the end of the study, those in the training group had a 71 percent improvement in knee extension strength, compared with a 3 percent improvement in patients in the control group, according to The Journal of Rheumatology (2001;28;1655-1664).
