Drug mimics benefits of exercise

Dont feel like exercising or cant exercise because you are sick? An answer may be on your way!

Researchers at Duke University Medical Center and the University of Texas, Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas have studied and discovered a biochemical pathway in muscle cells that is responsible for generating the beneficial effects of regular exercise.

The discovery of this biochemical pathway has inspired them to invent a new kind of drug to mimic the benefits of exercise. Dr R. Sanders Williams, dean of the Duke University School of Medicine and senior author of this study that was published in the April 12, 2002 issue of the journal Science remarked, This drug, which generates the same effect as aerobic exercising could well improve the quality of life of people suffering from chronic illness, who are unable to exercise. In addition, the researchers also said that these drugs could help prevent diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Dr William adds, These findings are clinically significant not only because skeletal muscles are necessary for movement, but because they affect the metabolism of sugar and fats that circulate in the blood. The metabolic properties of skeletal muscles determine a person's risk of developing diabetes and other chronic conditions.
