Digestive problems & Niacin
Dr. Jonathan Prousky, Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine pointed out that a lack of vitamin B3 (niacin, niacinamide) in the daily diet can cause digestive problems known as hypochlorhydria. There are some people who may require a higher level of vitamin B3 especially when they are under tremendous stress. Under such circumstances, if vitamin B3 is not supplemented, they will start to have digestive problems. In his studies and investigations, Dr. Prousky cited an example of two patients who had abdominal bloating and other digestion-related problems. After taking supplements of 1 to 3 grams a day of niacin (in divided doses), their conditions improved very significantly. One of the patients who was suffering from gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) reported no further symptoms after taking this supplement. As such, Dr. Prousky is very confident to say that patients who suffer the symptoms of low stomach acid production can markedly improve their condition by supplementing 200 to 500 mg of niacinamide with every meal. In more severe cases, betaine hydrochloride together with 500 to 1,000 mg of niacin during meals should be taken. Furthermore, this may also help to eradicate a Helicobacter pylori infection.
