Arsenic in Drinking Water
Taiwanese researchers have found that men who are exposed to high levels of inorganic arsenic in their drinking water have a 29 times increased risk of developing bladder cancer. This is corroborated by similar studies done in Chile, Chile, Argentina, Japan and the UK. This alarming fact has only been addressed by the World Health Organization and the European Union recently. Steps were taken to minimize the problem and the maximum acceptable level of arsenic in drinking water was set at 10 ppb (parts per billion). In Canada, the level is 25 ppb and the US, 50 ppb. Health Canada has admitted that the 25 ppb level was actually decided upon based on the current water treatment facilities to reduce arsenic contamination, rather than scientific evidence on arsenic tolerance levels.
