Increased Risk of Type 2 Diabetes
A study conducted by researchers from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center reveals that estrogen supplementation after menopause may increase the risk of Type 2 diabetes. Based on 850 American Indian women; who are at high risk for the disease, the study examined the relationship between estrogen use and glucose and insulin levels, along with the risk of type 2 diabetes. The results show a link between estrogen use and lower fasting blood sugar levels, but higher levels of the 2-h glucose level. Although there is no direct correlation between estrogen use and an increased risk of diabetes in general, an increased risk became apparent when the therapy time lengthens. This area of concern however, has not been sufficiently explored. Previous studies have been limited to white women who are already at lower risk of the disease as compared to other ethnicities.
