Cholesterol Lowering Drugs Recommended

New guidelines pertaining to cholesterol medication eligibility have been set by the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) in 2001. Now, patients with LDL (bad) cholesterol of 130 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) of blood in addition to two risk factors for heart disease are eligible for cholesterol lowering medication. This is a 30 mg/dl reduction from before.

These new guidelines qualify 36 million Americans for drug therapy, up from the 15 million who were eligible before 2001. Of these 36 million, approximately 13 million are no older than 56, and more than 9 million are older than 65. About 55% of these are men.

Also, the new guidelines introduce even lower daily intakes of saturated fat, a higher blood level of HDL (good) cholesterol as well as more rigorous blood tests.
