HOMEOPATHICS: THE NATURAL APPROACH n increasing number of suppliers and distributors in the nutritional, alternative health care and complimentary medical fields are looking to homeopathic preparations to expand their existing product lines. These are not dietary supplement products that contain vague statements of nutritional support that cause consumers to walk out of the stores scratching their heads in a state of confusion. These are lawful, FDA-regulated products, frequently containing botanicals and other basic ingredients, that include precise and very direct therapeutic claims. Homeopathic products are emerging as a leader in line extension for a number of very basic reasons. The FDA regulates homeopathic products as "drugs". This allows them to be sold over-the-counter for specific, self-limiting conditions. These include symptoms and complaints that can be effectively diagnosed and treated by individuals without seeing a doctor. In addition, homeopathic preparations possess a number of unique qualities that are usually attractive to the consumer. While American consumers are focusing on building up their own bodies to enable them to protect and heal themselves, homeopathic products fall right into this niche. The approach of homeopathy is to trigger the bodys defense system with small doses of a substance that, when taken in larger amounts, causes those symptoms. The small doses stimulate the bodys defense system to combat the disease. The most powerful treatment is achieved through the use of the smallest possible dosage that will stimulate a healing response in the patient. This results in products that do not produce side effects, will not react with allopathic formulations, and do not cause habitual use. All of these attributes are coupled with the ability to make detailed claims for specific therapeutic uses, the exact kind of claims that dietary supplement manufacturers must avoid. While answering a growing need in the marketplace, homeopathic products also must comply with basic requirements for OTC drug products. These requirements include labeling of active ingredients, directions for safe and effective use, a major indication for use, and standard warnings required for all such products. Increasing numbers of companies that supply and market natural products are finding that homeopathic products can take them in an aggressive new direction in the natural health industry.
